How This Formula Works

Amp-hours (Ah) measures charge capacity — how many amps a battery can deliver for one hour. Multiplying by voltage gives watt-hours (Wh), and dividing by 1,000 converts to kWh. EV battery packs typically run at 350–800V nominal, so a 200Ah 400V pack holds 80 kWh. Home battery systems and golf carts use lower voltages (12–48V).

Common EV Examples

Tesla Model 3 LR battery
~193 Ah × 400V
≈77 kWh
Hyundai Ioniq 5 (800V)
~96 Ah × 800V
≈77 kWh
Nissan Leaf 40 kWh
~111 Ah × 360V
≈40 kWh
Golf cart pack (48V)
200 Ah × 48V
9.6 kWh
LiFePO4 home battery (48V)
300 Ah × 48V
14.4 kWh
Rivian R1T (800V)
~169 Ah × 800V
≈135 kWh
